This breathtaking new production of SOUTH PACIFIC is based on the 2008 Tony Award-winning Lincoln Center Theater production, directed by Bartlett Sher.
Set on a tropical island during World War II, the musical tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of war and their own prejudices. The beloved score’s songs include “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” “This Nearly Was Mine,” and “There is Nothin’ Like a Dame.” USA Today cheers, “Gorgeous! SOUTH PACIFIC doesn’t just float; it soars!”

I was looking forward to this musical as it had been my mother's favorite. She had passed away this year so I knew I had to see this show for the first time on stage. I was not disappointed. As musicals go I knew more than half the songs already and found that even though it was from a time period 70 years ago it strikes at the center of mankind. Relationships. The story is pretty good and the stand out actors and actresses make it even more so. Foy-Mahi as Bloody Mary steals every scene she is in. As roles go in my opinion that one and Luther Billis, played perfectly by Christian Marriner provide a lot of the heart and soul (and comedy) to this piece. The main love stories take a small leap by the patrons imagination but if you sit back and just enjoy the beautiful music and singing you will not be disappointed. The set and costumes are spot on for the production and hopefully you will not surrounded by a couple of theatre talkers and can enjoy the show in it full splender.

If you're anything like me, you grew up listening to classic Rodgers & Hammerstein - The Sound of Music, Oklahoma!, and South Pacific - while your mom was busy around the house singing along. This production conjures all of those old memories, while reminding us that the same issues - racism, war, and romance - still exist today. Technical aspects of the production shined, with a beautiful set and effective lighting. The follow spots seemed to have difficulty keeping up with the action, but that was a minor distraction. Obviously what makes any musical successful is the music, both instrumentally and vocally. Both were excellent, from the beautiful sounds of the orchestra, to the effortless voices of the performers. The levels of emotions portrayed through the spoken portions were a tad flat, but that wasn't enough to detract from the overall show, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Of particular note was Bloody Mary (Cathy Foy-Mahi) who charmed the audience from the outset. Go see this show!

If you like traditional musicals, you MUST see this show. The familiar songs are all there. The voices are excellent, especially Marcelo Guzzo as Emile, Shane Donovan as Cable and Katie Reid as Nellie. The sets and costumes are superb. So are the dancing and the comedy. And the Dames ... Nothin' like 'em. On the serious side, it is interesting to see the 1949 take on racial prejudice. I have two quibbles: 1) Act 1 is 100 minutes, Act 2 is 60 minutes more; be prepared. 2) I did not believe this Nellie was young and foolish.
I would still strongly recommend this show.

This version or Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “South Pacific” works beautifully on the Bass stage. (If you are beyond orchestra seating and want a close-up view of facial expressions and costumes, bring or rent binoculars. $5 in the lobby. It's worth it.) The cast members’ lovely, resonant, singing voices, particularly Marcelo Guzzo’s “Emile de Becque, were the highlight of the performance. The extensively detailed sets are impressive and scene changes are amazingly quick. The creative lighting, which casually reveals the mysterious island of Bali Ha’i, is magical. Catherine Zuber’s costumes wonderfully capture the WWII period, right down to the period swimsuits. The show’s once controversial themes still provoke self-examination of one’s “learned prejudices.” Only five more performances, so hustle to secure your tickets, are head for College Station next week. Even if you’ve seen the movie a dozen times, this superb revival will charm you right into a grass skirt.

Granted, it’s hard to think of 30 actors as an “ensemble.” But this carefully blended cast is as tightly a woven group of thespians as one can expect in sometimes road-weary touring productions. / The leads are talented and attractive – Uruguayan baritone Marcelo Guzzo as mysterious planter Emile de Becque and Coloradoan Katie Reid as Ensign Nellie Forbush. (Actual age differences, however, require a bit of patron imagination.) Foy-Mahi as the scheming “Bloody Mary” constantly steals the limelight with her own huge voice, and the charming supporting characters hold everyone’s attention: Christian Marriner as the entrepreneurial sailor Luther Billis, chunky Erik Cheski as “Stewpot” and the actor (?) playing “Professor” are stand-outs. / The “interracial marriage” and “racial prejudice” issues may seem a bit dated to younger patrons, but for those of us old enough to remember, it still resonates vividly. We’ve come a long way. This “SP” version has great scenery, terrific lighting (more)

With soaring music and singing, detailed costumes and sets, and good staging and lighting, this musical carries the audience onto a tropical island and into issues of romance, war, and racial prejudice. I especially enjoyed the energetic and fun ensemble songs. The actors harmonized beautifully together in such well known songs as "There is Nothin' Like a Dame" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair". The dancing and comedy throughout added much to the show. The standouts in singing and acting were some of the minor characters, Cathy Foy-Mahi as Bloody Mary, Christian Marriner as Billis, and Shane Donovan as Lt.Cable as well as the great ensemble of armed forces, nurses, and islanders. There were also several young children who were delightful. This musical appeared fresh and current and not dated. It's a very well done revival, which leaves the audience with feelings of love and hope.
