Essential Cinema: Ceddo

Add Review/Comment
"Sembene's most ambitious and remarkable film uses the story of the kidnapping of a beautiful princess to examine the confrontation between opposing forces in the face of Muslim expansion. The "Ceddo" (pronounced "ched-doe") --or feudal class of common people -- cling desperately to their customs and their fetishistic religion. Set loosely in the 19th century, CEDDO ranges far and wide to include philosophy, fantasy, militant politics and a couple of electrifying leaps across the centuries to evoke the whole of the African experience."
"Achieves an operatic orchestration of raw forces similar to Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky or Kurosawa's SEVEN SAMURAI."--The Village Voice
