The Dudleys! A Family Game by Leegrid Stevens

This evocative new play translates a young man’s adolescent memories into a malfunctioning 8-bit video game, the kind he used to play as a child. A life-size video game onstage provides the setting in which the characters must score points and overcome obstacles as they navigate their way through the dangers of their own family. "The Dudleys!" features original video and a live 8-bit band of Ataris, Gameboys, and Commodore 64s performing original chip-tune songs (a new genre of electronic music in which old video game consoles are hacked and reprogrammed as synthesizers). "The Dudleys!" pits the two-dimensional, side-scrolling world of zombie shooting and treasure hunting against the three-dimensional sprawl of real life.

      The Dudley's on the surface seems to be a good fun-loving play with the quirk of being done with 8pt imagery that flashes you back to the early video games of the 80's. What you get though is not just a fun quirky flashback but an intense retrospective into the last days of the family's patriarch and the handling of his death. It was a wonderful mix of both fun and seriousness. Kudos to Tutto Theatre for the wonderful use of multi-media and an interesting story backdrop while still maintaining depth and purpose. You want to make sure you see this intriguing new work. Collapse

      To be honest, I haven't played video games so the whole genre and uses of all the clever adaptations and innovations escaped me a bit, but I still could enjoy the dynamic action and interplay with the scrolling screen, clever use of the two dimension as a backdrop into the live dimension. Leegrid Steven,(the Gamer) who wrote this play clearly had the clever hand of gaming knowledge and the cast did a superb job of executing the moves, playing upon a back screen of computer generated scenery. Clever use of minimal props pieces. Directed by Gary Jaffe, a job well done in giving the family multiple dimensions inside a video game. Eri Treadway's Clara, Robert Deike's Tom, and the rest of the family Vic (Braden Hunt), Sylvia, (Jenny Keto) and Derek (Alex Cogburn) captured the dysfunctional memories of the video game. If you are really into gaming, this will be a fantastic voyage, for those who are on the sidelines, the Dudley Family was intriguing and good entertainment. Collapse

      What first strikes you about The Dudley's! are the incredible original graphics created for the "old-school" video-game lens playwright Leegrid Stevens calls for in his new work. The play takes us on the journey of a family as they navigate through one particular event in their lives which affects them for the duration of said (video-game) "lives". Whose story it is, exactly, is sometimes muddled and at moments during the play an audience member can feel a bit lost in the telling of the actual story, however what brings us back are the scenes of lively and humorous connection between the characters onstage and the video game they are playing out in parallel. The actual abstraction of the video game as a framework for the whole piece is something anyone in their twenties to thirties can admire with great nostalgia, and only makes you more endeared to the characters. The acting itself is very commendable in this production, with especially strong performances by the core family. Collapse
