Rude Mechs presents the world premiere of their western musical and transmedia shindig, I've Never Been So Happy. With music and lyrics by Austin Experimental Punk Grand Wizard Peter Stopschinski (Brown Whornet, Golden Hornet Project), and book and lyrics by Austin Experimental Theatre Mascot Kirk Lynn, this show fluxuates freely between high art and Hee-Haw, treating both with respect. The music pits "Grand Ole Opry" against an "El Topo" style West. The writing butts lyric poetry up against bar jokes with finesse. The evening challenges what it means to "go to the theater" in 2011.

      This was my first Rude Mechanicals experience. I had been told they were great, but the show exceeded my high expectations. The plot was fun and fantastical with a pair of Dachshunds as narrators, a wild cat that speaks death metal style, and a sheriff with a fucking foul mouth. The wide variety of music was catchy and, at times, touching. The projected animations usually added to the story and made the experience feel bigger and more sensory. The group advertises the show as something that could only come out of Austin – and by the end of the show, once breakfast tacos got a mention, I agreed. As a side note, I also appreciated the strong female characters and conservation theme. Collapse

      I've never been so happy to live in Austin, where the Rude Mechs put on a great show reaching beyond the limits of much of what we call "theater" now-a-days. The evening's performance oozes beyond the stage, creating a consummate theatrical event which immerses the attendees in a world, rather than just a good story. And what a good story it is! The company has taken its time crafting a raucous, funny, energetic and obscenely original take on the South, the folk tale and decades of musical influences. From the characters and the visual spectacle (which was truly spectacular) onstage, to the Transmedia intermission event, the Rude Mechs lead you on a Wild West ride from start to finish. And what I love about this theater company is that they take full advantage of the power of communal experience. The finale in itself is one of those wonderful moments of theater, where you aren't just an audience member, but a fellow human being in this Wild West ride called life. A must see! Collapse

      The Rude Mechs have done it again! This was an incredible show and left me wondering how I can fit into my schedule a chance to see it again! Kudos to the entire cast and all the musicians. Special shout-out to Jenny Larson and Paul Soileau for completely embodying the characters of the two Dachshunds! This play is a perfect example of the incredible direction that theatre is going in; with multiple layers of media, technology and music that aren't fillers but rather additional characters that move the story forward. Bravo! Collapse
