Dealing with a script like this one is not an easy task. Most people are familiar with the story, and a little skeptical upon walking into the theatre. I know I was, and I was entirely mistaken. I was completely absorbed in the show. Andy Brown, Derek Jones, and the rest of the ensemble gave this piece so much humanity I found myself searching for a tissue during curtain call. It is well worth your time to go and see this show.

Wonderful script of course, acting was intense, great delivery for opening night jitters. Production set was excellent, characters well defined and heart wrenching, well played, a must go see. The slight hitch was in the costuming, the main characters seemed incongruous with the rest of the cast, but overall, so thoughtful. Again, intense drama, great characterizations by Derek Jones as George and Andy Brown's Lennie. Garry Peters as CANDY (WOW). Samantha Brewer as Curley's Wife - what a perfect TART! Well done.

I have to admit I was a little hesitant to see this show. After all, it's a classic of American Literature. How could they do justice to this heart-rending story of George and Lennie, and their struggle to pursue the dream of owning "their own place?" However, my fears were immediately put to rest as Derek Jones (George) and Andy Brown (Lennie) took the stage. They 'were' George and Lennie, and we were transported back to the Depression Era. Jones and Brown have an uncanny connection, and the strong relationship between George and Lennie is palpable, even in it's tension and violence. Garry Peters stands out also as Candy, although at times he tends to draw out the dialogue a bit too much. The set is minimal, and lends itself well to the diminutive stage of City Theatre, and the music is perfect, adding to the mood. Supporting cast are excellent, all approaching brilliance at some point. Of note are Gabriel Smith as Curley, and Gabriel Diehl as Whit. Look for BIP nods for the leads.

Don't miss this show! It was moving, emotional, funny, heart-wrenching and why anyone would want to attend live theatre. Treating Steinbeck's classic story which such beauty, City Theatre has assembled one of the finest casts I've seen in a long time. Derek Jones and Andy Brown are tremendous in the lead roles and the ensemble including Garry Peters, Daniel Sawtelle, Gabriel Smith and Samantha Brewer hit all the right marks. The entire cast created living and breathing characters existing in hard times many years ago but bringing to us themes and ideas that are still relevant today. I applaud their work. And credit must also be given to the design of the show which was very nicely done. Folks, go see it! The standing ovation given on the night I attended was well-deserved. It will be one of the best in Austin this year.

... literally. This production has a way of involving
you in it, giving the audience the experience of
living this story as it unfolds. The two lead
characters, George and Lennie, have great
chemistry together. This is partly due to the script,
though more related to the ways both actors
embody their characters. You are with them as they
eat canned beans around a campfire in rural
California. While Steinbeck didn’t write make-you-
feel-good novels, this compelling show makes you
think about life. The City Theater has created a
fantastic production of this show. Highly
recommended!

What makes something timeless? One answer is its relevance to future generations. Of Mice and Men hits at the heart of the struggle for dreams, the attempt to look out for one another and the sad reality that bad things can happen to good people. City Theatre has no shortage of quality acting talent. The story of George and Lenny trying to make just enough money to get a farm and live off the fat of the land is well known even by some who just know the references and not the book, play or movies. Set, costumes and lighting all target the audience into totally believing you are seeing something from the 1930s in its clever arrangement. Derek Jones and Andy Brown deliver the heart and soul for this story. They don't try to oversell what is expected of these characters and just do their own take on it. Garry Powers nearly steals every scene he is in with his Candy character. Scot Friedman, Ben Woods, Samantha Brewer, Gabriel Smith, Larry Oliver, Gabriel Diehl and Daniel Sawtelle all shine
