The Harmony Game: The Making of Bridge Over Troubled Water
Saturday, March 19 – 4:30p.m. and 7:30p.m.
General Admission: $10
The Harmony Game tells the story behind Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water, an album shrouded in rock mythology with legendary tales of inspiration, innovation and separation. This spectacular documentary includes archival footage and brand new interviews with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel discussing the creation and reception of Bridge Over Troubled Water, along with several of the duo’s collaborators from the period including Roy Halee (co-producer/engineer), Hal Blaine (drums), Joe Osborn (bass guitar), Jimmie Haskell (arranger), and Mort Lewis (manager). Directed by Jennifer LeBeau, The Harmony Game runs 1 hour 12 minutes.
Tosca
Sunday, March 20 – 3p.m.
Adults: $20, Students: $16
Composed by Giacomo Puccini and performed at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Italy, Tosca is a melodrama piece set in Rome in 1800, with the Kingdom of Naples’ control of Rome threatened by Napoleon’s invasion of Italy. It begins with a political prisoner hiding out in a church, while Rome is under martial law, and no one is safe. Celebrated opera singer Floria Tosca will do anything to protect her lover Mario Cavaradossi, a painter arrested for aiding the prisoner. She visits the unscrupulous police chief Scarpia late at night to plead for him. Scarpia, stooping to blackmail and torture, demands to sleep with Tosca as the price for Cavaradossi’s release. She agrees, but when Scarpia signs the release order she kills him. She and Cavaradossi look forward to freedom together, but Scarpia never intended to play fair and has double-crossed the lovers. As his guards pursue her, Tosca hurls herself from the parapet. Depictions of torture, murder and suicide, accompany some of Puccini's best-known lyrical arias, and have inspired memorable performances from many of opera's leading singers. Tosca is presented in Italian with English subtitles and runs 2 hours and 30 minutes with two intermissions. Presented in partnership with Austin Lyric Opera.
Romeo & Juliet
Wednesday, March 23 – 7:00p.m.
General Admission: $15, Students: $10
Performed at the Globe Theatre in London, Romeo & Juliet is one of the great tragedy themed plays by William Shakespeare involving the "star-crossed" young lovers Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, two young teenagers who fall deeply in love but are forbidden from seeing each other because their families are bitter enemies. Regardless of the feud between their families they marry in secret, making every effort to conceal their actions. The story, however, ends in tragedy when Romeo, Juliet, and many of the supporting characters all decease. The themes running through the play address the issues of the consequences of immature blind passion, hatred and prejudice. Romeo & Juliet is directed by Dominic Dromgoole and runs 2 hours 51 minutes with one intermission. Presented in partnership with Austin Shakespeare.
Caligula
Friday, March 25 – 8:00p.m.
General Admission: $15, Students: $10
Performed by Paris Opera Ballet, Caligula is Principal Dancer Nicolas Le Riche's first choreography set on the renown French company. Intrigued by the complex and troubling personality of the Roman emperor, the choreographer evokes the torments of a frail man capable of loving the moon and idolizing his horse, a man impassioned by theatre and constantly playing a role himself. Constructed as a tragedy, the choreography follows the inexorable progression of this solitary hero towards death, accompanied by Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons.” Caligula runs 1 hour 24 minutes.
