The romantic musical comedy explosion of love, laughter and rock n' roll! If music be the food of love, then play on in this adaptation of Shakespeare's The Two Gentlemen of Verona. Four young lovers hit the road to romance and find their bonds of friendship tested along the way when they encounter the entanglements of stubborn fathers, pesky cupids, dirty outlaws, and everything in between. Don't miss the no holds “bard” pop musical filled with comedy, song, dance and the triumphs of young love.

      Snappy tunes,entertaining choice of costumes, and a mixture of good text,good songs, but alas needed a little more lung power. Adaptations are sometimes tricky in finding the mix between dedication to the words to move the plot. I was lost in the why Julia would every want to go back to Proteus. Antonio (Kirk Kelso) has a lot of courage to wear that Pink Number. Beaucoups to all of the cast, the veterans showed their skills, the newcomers showed their enthusiasm. Didn't quite meet the bar, but a good start. Collapse

      I am a huge fan of Shakespeare's theatre and always interested in how his work gets staged when adapted into a musical piece. I thoroughly enjoyed Spring of Love! Exceptional singers and performers... Expand

      I am a huge fan of Shakespeare's theatre and always interested in how his work gets staged when adapted into a musical piece. I thoroughly enjoyed Spring of Love! Exceptional singers and performers including Ashley Edwards, Matthew Burnett and Michelle Alexander who easily wrapped themselves around the simple story line of love - and love lost - and who shined throughout. Kudos to the plot twist of the narrator and the canine who will steal the show. With a nice mix of country, blues and pop songs, Spring of Love is great fun theatre entertainment that is a sure hit this time of year. Play on, lovers! Collapse

      Musical interpretations of Shakespeare are of course nothing new. Westside Story is obviously the most well-known example, in addition, to a movie musical of "Love Labour's Lost," and the Tony award winning 1971 Broadway version of "Two Gentleman of Verona." "This Spring of Love," another musical adaptation of the latter, features a talented cast and entertaining performances, but unfortunately an uneven execution/adaptation. It follows the text of "Two Gentlemen of Verona" to the letter for the dialogue, and intersperses musical numbers that range in style from jazz to gospel to burlesque. I would recommend reading at least a cliff notes version of the play before seeing the musical adaptation. Shakespeare's original text doesn't have neat cues for musical numbers, and sometimes the songs weighed the story down rather than enhanced it. The cast was entertaining, and has a nice mix of veterans and new-comers to the Austin theatre scene. Collapse

Adaptations are sometimes tricky in finding the mix between dedication to the words to move the plot. I was lost in the why Julia would every want to go back to Proteus.
