The Austin chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) today announces the sessions, speakers, and schedules for the first ever Type1Now Conference—a full day of education and resources on all aspects of children and adults living with the condition for all individuals personally affected by type 1. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Steve Ponder, a luminary in the field of diabetes management.

Every hour, three people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in the United States. That’s 30,000 per year with as many as 3 million Americans living with type 1 at any given time. Put another way, 1 in about 450 people in the general population will be diagnosed with type 1. That means that in the Austin–Round Rock–San Marcos metropolitan area alone, around 3,700 people are living with the condition. Unlike type 2 diabetes (a prevalent metabolic disorder), type 1 is an autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas suddenly stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food.

Type 1 diabetes usually strikes in childhood, adolescence, or young adulthood, and lasts a lifetime. The condition is manageable but has no proven cure. Until then, people living with type 1 and those who participate in their care must live with a regimen of frequent blood sugar checks, insulin injections and pumps, and closely counting of carbohydrates in all food consumed—maintaining a vigilant watch for dangerous low blood sugar levels and long-term complications. The time commitments and isolation make conferences like this crucial for learning.

A first for central Texas, Type1Now welcomes those diagnosed or managing the care of type 1 diabetes from JDRF Austin’s 25 county territory and as far away as Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Laredo, and San Angelo. Participants will have the rare opportunity to learn from respected professionals in the field as well as a chance to share practical tips and techniques for better management of the chronic disease.
