Defrocked priest T. Lawrence Shannon now scrapes out a living as a tour guide in Mexico. On the verge of a mental collapse, he abducts his tour group to a crumbling seaside hotel on the edge of the jungle. As a fierce tropical storm rolls in, Shannon must wrestle with the passions of the women around him – the wrath of a Texas school teacher, the advances of a lustful teenager and the jealousies of the widowed hotel owner – as he seeks solace with a new arrival, a gentle spinster traveling with her grandfather – the world's oldest living poet.

Having seen only the film version of Tennessee Williams, The Night of the Iguana was quite a task for the Different Stages Theatre Company. The show is a bit long but luckily the cast is able to help pass the time. This is a story of a man trying to find his place in the world. Tom Chamberlain's Reverend Shannon provides the biting narrative that works. Content Love Knowles, Maxine Faulk and Rebecca Robinson, Hannah Jelkes prove to be great counters to one another. Donald Bayne, Jonathan Coffin was so kind and entertaining.
Karen Jambon as Judith Fellowes just ate up the stage to putting the Reverend in line. Chloe Edmundson as Charlotte Goodall brought such a life to being on stage and only regret that Williams play did not have enough for her to do. I hope Austin stages see more of her. The staging worked well, except for the hammock bracket which at least five of the actors tripped over. The minor characters of the Germans and the hotel help provided a great comic moments.

Tennessee Williams' Night of the Iguana is the story of a man losing himself, his way and his professions. The Reverend Shannon is in Mexico with a tour group of "his ladies". He has waylaid his group at a run down hotel, one he is familiar with but that is not on the itinerary. Turmoil erupts as the ladies insist on leaving, and the hotel owner offers rum cocos and herself to the recalcitrant Shannon. Not only does the Reverend have to deflect the passion of the hotel owner, but also that of an underage member of the ladies party. In addition there's the artist and her "97 year young" grandfather who add to the mix of problems. The ladies-man Shannon is a "L"oser. All the main actors were fabulous, and some humor was injected by a Mexican-help character. BUT, something, I can't put my finger on it, seemed to be missing. I still found the play entertaining; two and half hours well-spent.

I'm sure most people would enjoy seeing this show BUT, they should know rite up front that there is NO REAL IGUANA.

I may be a bit biased because I love all things Tennessee Williams. And let me assure you, Iguana is a difficult play to say the least, and it's long. But on opening night it seemed to zip by in a flash. It was original and fresh, as if it were written last week. Don't miss this one, it isn't produced often enough, and you'll enjoy the cast and crew. They were all marvelous and leave you wanting more...
