The Trouble Puppet Theater Company returns with a fully realized production of its award-winning adaptation The Jungle. Funded by a Jim Henson Foundation Project Grant, this season’s production promises to outshine the earlier version that received such accolades as these:

1.•B. Iden Payne Awards for Award for Outstanding Director of a Drama, Outstanding Original Script, Outstanding Sound Design, and Special Certificate for Puppetry.
2.•Places on three “Best of 2009” lists in the Austin Chronicle.
3.•Reviewer Robert Faires said “[Artistic Director] Connor Hopkins distilled Upton Sinclair's novel of immigrants ground up by the meatpacking industry into a sepia-tinted tone poem, made hauntingly human by puppets of paper and string.”

The Trouble Puppet Theater Company’s production of The Jungle is an adaptation of Upton Sinclair’s 1906 muckraking novel about immigrant laborers in Chicago. The novel’s portrayal of the unsanitary and inhumane practices of the meat-packing industry, as well as the brutality of working conditions in turn-of-the-century America, shocked the nation.

      As a newbie to the word of dramatic puppetry, I was joyfully stunned by the effect of this performance. It was surprisingly cinematic, quick-moving and graceful. Its puppet-characters exploited... Expand

      As a newbie to the word of dramatic puppetry, I was joyfully stunned by the effect of this performance. It was surprisingly cinematic, quick-moving and graceful. Its puppet-characters exploited their non-humanness to create moments of high theatricality, to perform would-be life-threatening stunts (like diving down a meat grinder) and to hyper-focus our attention on the slightest movement, making us sensitive to the possible meaning behind each gesture. The relationships between audience, puppets and puppeteers created a series of overlapping fourth walls which were broken artfully and potently. And the nature of the medium allowed me to suspend my disbelief far beyond the grace I'd allow flesh-and-blood actors. Clever, magical and affecting, "The Jungle" is a cautionary tale against the horrors of human labor crimes that tackles familiar territory with fresh imagination and poignancy. Collapse
