Austin's Jazz Pharaohs, a longtime fixture at the Elephant Room and other Austin-area venues, will visit the Austin Traditional Jazz Society for a concert Sunday, February 13th from 2 to 5 pm at the Cap City Comedy Club.

Stanley Smith, the Head Pharaoh, offers smooth vocals and clarinet playing. The ensemble boasts one of Austin's best upright bass players, Ryan Gould. As for jazz guitar and banjo, it doesn't get much better than J.D. Pendley. The other front line musicians are Jon Doyle on tenor saxophone and clarinet, David Jellema on cornet and Freddie Mendoza on trombone, all incredible musicians. Liz Morphis handles the vocals.

The band was formed in 1991. A year later, it began a weekly engagement at the Elephant Room in downtown Austin. Sixteen years later, with many fine musicians coming and going, the band continues its gig there every Wednesday night.

The Jazz Pharaohs and the Austin music scene have been fortunate to attract the talents of young musicians who share a love and a respect for the early jazz styles and the giants of early jazz.
