On Saturday, March 5th, Wally Workman Gallery opens a two-person show with landscape painter Jill Carver and craftsman Seth Hudson. Nationally renowned, Jill Carver has received numerous awards for her plein air painting. Originally from England, she moved to Texas in 2002 and fell in love with the Western landscape. Carver's bold use of color and decisive brushstrokes leave no question to her understanding of the terrain. She pays particular attention to the movement of a place and she is able to capture not only what the scene looks like, but more importantly, what it feels like. This allows Carver to convey the dynamicity of the natural world, giving her viewers a true sense that her landscapes are changing along with the rest of us.

Craftsman Seth Hudson's creations are a result of a dialogue of various life experiences. It all started at age five when his grandmother gave him his first set of "real" tools. Here was born a love of creating and building. From his father and his grandfather, a master carpenter, he learned fine woodworking and finishing skills as well as an appreciation for rare and fine wood, especially mahogany which his grandfather harvested from old naval ships around New Orleans. At age eleven, living in rural Louisiana, he would fight boredom by balancing brooms, chairs, or anything he could find on his hand, foot, or even chin. He also had his first job sweeping floors for a spiral staircase company and became enamored of the steam bending process used to make arches and curves with a seemingly rigid medium. His various experiences beget his life long fascination with balance, organic shapes, and movement that persist in his art today. Hudson's art embodies the concept most necessary to his life, an effortlessly gentle balance in motion. Carver and Hudson both work and live in Austin, Texas.
