    w/ Filmmaker Robin Hessman.

Perestroika was a magical word in the US in the late 1980s. It suggested a new Soviet Union full of freedom and vastly improved relations with the West. President Mikhail Gorbachev, who initiated perestroika, was a true visionary who did indeed wish to restructure the government and economic system of his vast empire. But change, which he hoped to introduce methodically, began to speed up and out of control. Suddenly the Soviet Union collapsed and Russia was overrun by mafiosi, cowboy capitalists, and high-ranking cronies, who saw grand opportunities for grabbing power and property. It was a time of great upheaval and chaos.

And how did everyday Russians fare during and after perestroika? That is the subject of Robin Hessman’s fascinating and illuminating film. She focuses on five “ordinary Russians living in extraordinary times” – from their teenage years up to the present. Using home movies and official propaganda films of the Soviet era, coupled with present-day interviews and depictions of their current lives, Hessman provides “before and after” portraits of Lyuba, Borya, Andrei, Olga, and Ruslan. Their stories question whether life was better under Soviet control or today with seemingly more freedom to choose professions and find business opportunities.
