Beaches and water, photos and film, marriage, love and gender, humor and playfulness, cats and children are just some of the elements that make up the tableau of French director Agnès Varda, but it is her insight into the heart and her joy and compassion for her subjects that have captivated audiences since her first film, LA POINTE COURTE, in 1955. Coming from a background in art history and photography, she was mentored early on by Alain Renais (NIGHT AND FOG) who noticed a resemblance in her style to Visconti's LA TERRA TREMA (1948), and introduced her to André Bazin at Caheirs du Cinéma, who liked her first effort. Her next film, CLÉO DE 5 À 7 is usually considered among the early French New Wave and both of those films inspired directors Truffaut, Rohmer and Godard among others. But Varda veered from the New Wave, gravitating toward documentary and social issue activism in addition to fiction. In December 2009, AFS presented THE BEACHES OF AGNES, Varda's latest documentary, a comprehensive autobiography of her work and inspirations over her 50+ years of filmmaking (much of which remains unavailable in the US) that prompted this series. A prolific shorts maker, we are pleased to present this selection of features accompanied by shorts.
