Join the Austin History Center, Austin Public Library, for an informal panel discussion, Vamos A Platicar: Preserving Austin's Mexican American History. The discussion takes place at the Austin History Center, 810 Guadalupe Street, in the David Earl Holt Reception Room from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2011.

Vamos a Platicar seeks to encourage the preservation of local Mexican American history in Austin and Travis County. Discussion panelists will address the following questions. Who is actively preserving the history of our local Mexican American community? Why is it important to preserve this history? What part of the local Mexican American legacy is being documented in books, articles, documentaries and other scholarly resources? What are some of the incentives currently being used to ensure that our younger generation is aware of their local community history?

Discussion panelists will include Gloria Espitia, Neighborhood Liaison to the Mexican American Community at the Austin History Center, Margo Gutierrez, Librarian for U.S. Latino Studies of the Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection at the University of Texas at Austin, and Sylvia Orozco, Executive Director of Mexic-Arte Museum. After the discussion, go behind the walls of the Austin History Center to learn more about the collections that document the history of Austin and Travis County.
