    Wura-Natasha Ogunji
The epic crossings of an Ife head
    January 13 - February 17, 2011

Opening Reception: Thursday, January 13, 6 to 8pm

In large-scale paintings, delicately stitched drawings on architectural tracing paper, and videos, Ogunji explores connections to place, history, and memory. The image of the Nigerian Ife head, long a cultural touchstone of African civilization, recurs throughout Ogunji’s exhibition. But rather than just reflect upon African art of the past, she transports the Ife head here to set it upon a search for its descendents in the Americas. This journey occurs in videos in which Ogunji performs and in paintings, both suggesting strained movement and flight, between the physical and spiritual, between the past and the future.
