On Saturday, February 5th, the Wally Workman Gallery will open "New Works" by Austin-based artist Eliza Thomas. Showcased works in the exhibition represent a new direction for Thomas. She departs from color to explore the nuances of black and white and the shades of grey in between, leaving behind pencils and other drawing materials in favor of the sumi-e brush. The choice to work in ink, and sumi-e ink in particular, was inspired by her studies with a Japanese master-teacher of sumi-e painting, Shozo Sato. As an artist, Thomas has always been drawn to the Japanese and Chinese arts, especially calligraphy, suiboku-ga, sumi-e, and woodblock prints which emphasize quality of line to capture form. While not setting out to make traditional sumi-e paintings, she is inspired by the simplified and bold use of the brush. Thomas' work emphasizes dynamic power, elegance and tranquility through her attempt to capture the spirit of her subjects. The new works illustrate the idea in sumi-e painting of suggestibility, that is, leaving room for the viewer to complete the picture.

Eliza Thomas, who lives and works in Austin, received her B.A. from Barnard College and attended the School of Visual Arts and the Parsons School of Design in New York. In addition to Wally Workman Gallery, Thomas' artwork has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across the country. Her work is represented in public and private collections.

Opening reception on Saturday, February 5th from 6 to 8pm
