The Austin Playhouse has in my opinion the strongest core of group actors in Austin. I will boldly say it and don't mind if people disagree with me. One very fine actress is Bernadette Nason. She is a one woman show with a telling of the always popular classic A Christmas Carol. A Christmas Carol has been adapted countless ways and I am sure is the most played play on stage or in movies regarding the subject of Christmas. Bernadette completely steals the show with at least 10 or more of the characters she portrays. Her comic and dramatic timing for this one person story will keep one captivated during the entire show. There is no intermission and one would not be needed as time flies by with her acting.

“A Christmas Carol” has become woven so tightly into the Christmas experience that it has taken its place as an indispensable holiday tradition. The story of Ebenezer Scrooge’s transformation from a mean and stingy man, dead of spirit, into ”as good a friend, as good a master, and as good a man as the good old City knew” still brings delight in the telling.
That is true in spades in this delightful one-woman production starring Bernadette Nason and directed by Lara Toner. All the essential characters are there, brought to life by Ms. Nason with a distinct voice and look for each, so that you always know precisely who is speaking, what they look like, and how we should feel about them. Ms. Nason and Ms. Toner keep the characters moving about precisely so that the show is never static, and Don Day's subtle lighting keeps us in tune with the many changes in time and space.
And at the end you will find yourself with a tear at this charming and moving story.

If you have never seen Bernadette Nason perform,
with her many voices and marvelous faces, you
must hurry over to Austin Playhouse before it is too
late! Her retelling of Charles Dickens 'A Christmas
Carol' is a delightful way to spend an hour at the
theater. You have to stay on your toes, as she plays
every character in this beloved christmas story, and
for some young folks (so I have been told) it proved
to be a good workout for their brains - so used to
video games and the like. The audience the night I
was there was a mixture of young and old, and
everyone was swept away to Victorian England, to
sit by the fireplace with Tiny Tim and watch the
transformation of Scrooge from bah humbug to
christmas goose. Let's all raise our cup of Smoking
Bishop to a job well done.
