Mitch Fatel's showbiz saga represents a great example of how helpful it can be to know people-to have connections-and how that sort of leg up can only be truly valuable if the person has the talent and ability to deliver on such an opportunity. In a sense, his entrée to entertainment came as an intern on “The Howard Stern Show”-where, it's said, his duties included washing Howard's potatoes-and he may have arguably provided more of a career opportunity from that internship than received one, in that he introduced the Stern show to NYU buddy John Melendez, who became “Stuttering John,” a key character on Howard's programs for many years before Melendez became the announcer at “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.” At any rate, Fatel has come a long way, baby, from washing spuds-including almost countless appearances on “The Tonight Show” both as a stand-up and as a correspondent, as well as shots on “Letterman” and “Conan,” his own half-hour special on Comedy Central and more. Impressive as this is, his accomplishments extend well beyond the TV realm into various forms of showbiz media, from a visit to the Stern show as an official guest to multiple CD releases to lotsa writing (from journalism to scripts) and being named “Best Stand-Up Comedian” at the 2006 edition of the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, HBO's annual comedy confab in Aspen that's rife with first-rate funny folks, so that's no small kudo. You don't want to miss this guy-he's right here at Cap City this week.
