November 1-November 6, 2010
Add Review/Comment
The Opera Stampede is a week long celebration of film, and music that
highlights the creative diversity that is Austin, “The Live Music Capital of the World.”
This unique festival chock-full of live music for every taste, is the brain-child of ALO
General Director Kevin Patterson. Patterson says, “The Stampede celebrates live music
regardless of the style. This is the essence of the Austin music scene that is celebrated
around the world.
The Stampede begins with a 20th anniversary screening of Pretty Woman at the Alamo
Drafthouse South, November 1 at 7pm, featuring the talents of Master Pancake
Theater, twice voted Best Comedy Troupe by Austin Chronicle readers. The film is
a contemporary retelling of the opera La Traviata which opens the opera season on
November 6 and closes The Stampede.
The Stampede continues on Wednesday November 3 in Ducloux Hall on the ALO
campus with a 4pm Musician’s Workshop followed by a 7pm evening Unplugged
Concert by Blues guitarist Seth Walker. Walker is heralded by Blues Revue Magazine
as, “a splendid mix of roots styles: blues, soul and Americana, featuring deep-fried
guitar licks….” Del Castillo, “a band that fuses flamenco, rock, blues, salsa, cumbia,
reggae, ranchera and all things ridiculously rhythmic.” according to the Dallas Morning
News, will also visit Ducloux Hall for a Musician’s Workshop and Unplugged Concert on
Thursday November 4.
The Stampede then shifts to the Long Center’s Dell Hall for the 40th anniversary
concert of 9 time Grammy award winning musicians Ray Benson and Asleep at the
Wheel with special guest Willie Nelson. This benefit concert begins at 7:30pm. The
Stampede closes with the Opening Performance of La Traviata and a Black Tie and
Boots celebration.
Proceeds from the sale of tickets to each of these
events will go to benefit educational scholarships and programs of Austin Lyric Opera.
Our programs reach more than 15,000 people annually in the community. Additionally,
a portion of each ticket sale will support the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians
(HAAM), “Keeping Music Alive and Well in Austin.”
