From the 27th floor of the Empire State Building, George Simon, “the great G.S.,” practices law like King Kong. John Barrymore, “the Great Profile,” delivers those lines faster than the telegraph, slowing down only when talking about or addressing his wife and maybe the old Jewish ladies from back home. Wheeling-dealing, chocolate gobbling workaholic (“I don’t even know how to get drunk. All I know is work. Take work away from me, and what am I? A car without a motor – a living corpse.”), his star implodes when an ethical lapse comes back to haunt him. Barrymore facing the void rivals his performance in DINNER AT EIGHT.
