New Orleans, 1852: “This is 1852, dumpling – 1852. Not the dark ages,” snaps Bette Davis while trying on the red dress that sparks the high drama of JEZEBEL. Best of three films (including LITTLE FOXES) shared by Wyler and the leading lady, who had famously campaigned for GONE WITH THE WIND, this Biblically-punctuated cat fight on a hot tin plantation roof pits Davis against Henry Fonda, then loosens Buck Cantrell (George Brent) onto the proceeding as he spoils for a fight through the smile of a mongoose. Complicating matters is yellow fever (“yellow jack”), which erupts into a full-blown epidemic and leaves no cast member safe.
