Warning: play contains a sacrifice, sex, wrestling, gluttony, and dancing.

 

Pam and Richard are hosting their best friends, Wendy and Tom, for their annual dinner get-together. An animal sacrifice kicks off the evening, followed by a little more sex, violence, deception, revelations, wrestling and dancing than previous years. A darkly comic evening where the line between civilized and primal man is blurred, and where not everyone will survive long enough to enjoy the brownies for dessert.

      Though not family friendly, HUNTER GATHERERS is a hilarious, hysterical, raunchy romp of a play executed to perfection thanks to Capital T, Mark Pickell, and an "All-World" Cast. Hands down, the absolute play I've seen in Austin this year! Collapse

      Nothing better than seeing performers that commit 150%. The cast takes human self absorption and self deception to the limit and beyond. Go see this!

      In life one sometimes wonders, "did I cross the line?" There are little things that one can do where they may have done something slight or medium that in the eyes of mainstream society is in poor... Expand

      In life one sometimes wonders, "did I cross the line?" There are little things that one can do where they may have done something slight or medium that in the eyes of mainstream society is in poor taste. From the very beginning of Hunter Gatherers crossing that line, when a normal, everyday couple, take a tasty situation like dinner and make it over the top in slaughtering in the living room in an attempt to make things as fresh as possible for the dinner guests coming over. Nachtrieb's dark comedy gamely sees just how far it can go. The play is smart, fresh and funny, in a near twisted way where you see a special on tv where someone was just attacked by a hummingbird and screams like a little child. I don't want to go too much into the particulars of what happens in the show as describing it ruins the surprise. This play is cutting edge in taking something absurd and making it meaningful.       Capital T is one of my favorite theatre companies in Austin. This show was particularly good. While it featured a tight, inventive script, of particular note was this excellent ensemble. Each of these actors is well cast and the chemistry among them, the sense of fun, was wonderful. Highly recommended! Collapse

      It's hard to know how to describe Hunter-Gatherers in a few words. If I had to, though, I would describe it as "pleasantly disturbing fun." It begins with a married couple, Richard and Pam, as they prepare to have their friends, Tom and Wendy over. Richard has just brought a box that is moving, and we quickly learn that it's a lamb, and that he plans to sacrifice it and serve it for dinner. When Tom and Wendy arrive, the interpersonal dynamics get interesting. First off, Richard challenges Tom to a wrestling match, which he wins, apparently as usual. Further, it becomes clear during the dinner that the two couples are badly mismatched. The reticent, stuffed-shirt Tom clearly does not satisfy the free-spirited Wendy, and the virile Richard is weary of the good-girl Pam. Meanwhile, Richard's wrestling of Tom has homoerotic overtones. I won't spoil it, but how all the tension unfolds will either offend you, delight you, or both, but it will hold your attention. Kudos to Capital T. Collapse
