October 27, 2010
Add Review/Comment
The Icons of Photography No.8 lecture series brings Bruce Davidson to Austin.
Born in 1933, Bruce Davidson began taking photos when he was ten years old. By the time he was 25 he was already a full member of the Magnum Photo agency. The author of eighteen books, including a three-volume retrospective published by Steidl in 2010, Bruce Davidson has produced some of photography's greatest photo essays. In the late 60's Bruce photographed a single block in East Harlem with a 4x5 camera and from that work published the seminal photo book, East 100th Street, which was also curated as an exhibit for the Museum of Modern Art by John Szarkowski.
Bruce is also recognized for his dramatic color work in New York's subways, his historic documentation of the civil rights movement and a number of poignant photo essays that span the globe and capture some of the 20th centuries most important events. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts grants and is also an award winning filmmaker.
