It is so exciting to see these two performing arts groups collaborate to bring top-notch talents like Stephanie J. Block to Austin. The intimate Kodosky Lounge, with its walls of windows overlooking downtown, is a gorgeous setting in which to enjoy any performer. Ms. Block's Cabaret act features a variety of songs from both established and lesser-known (but not for long) composers. Interspersed with the songs, she tells stories of her career, the most compelling being the bittersweet story of her history with the role of Elphaba in WICKED. Though she now has several Broadway credits under her belt and is undeniably versatile, talented and likable, the stories she tells of her career's path leaves me feeling sorry that she has not yet quite achieved the *STAR* status that she has sought and certainly deserves. Still, she clearly has a large fan base, and I thought that the comedic and jazzy numbers she performed were particularly well-suited to the Cabaret's setting and acoustics.

My girlfriend had never been to a real cabaret show. I knew this one would be great because my NY friends had told me what to expect. Watching my date watching Block was a blast. She didn't think she would enjoy it as much as she did, and she can't wait to see another. I grew up in show business, so I explained that just because someone has a great voice, doesn't mean they can "sell" a song. It takes great acting skills, and that's what the difference is all about. Block was outstanding, what a great show!

It was a perfect night, featuring a fantastic performance by a most talented women in a gorgeous setting. It was my first time in the Kodosky Lounge at the Long Center, which is encircled with windows so that downtown Austin became our backdrop. Our singer entertained us with the most breath-taking voice accompanied by her delightful stories of Broadway. Her great story-telling ability was punctuated with her excited and child-like "I'm going to be a star" additions. I am a WICKED-addict so I absolutely loved her stories about Stephen Schwartz calling her personally in San Diego to help him work through the creation of his musical so long ago. (If you are familiar with the story of WICKED, she married her Fiyero - her leading man in WICKED - 3 years ago and he was in attendance at her performance and appears to be her biggest fan.) Her ups and downs with WICKED, THE PIRATE QUEEN, and playing Liza Minnelli in THE BOY FROM OZ were described so well, I felt like her closest confidant.

Although her genre of music is not my preference, I thoroughly enjoyed the performance by Stephanie Block at the Long Center. No question the woman can sing, but she can also tell interesting stories. A very likeable performer. I was expecting something more like "Cabaret"/"All That Jazz" tunes, but Stephanie belted out more of what I would term classical musical numbers. And unbelievably well. It was a pleasure to be present for such a show. We had great seats in the Kodosky Lounge of the Long Performance Art Center, but a man with a huge head moved out of the set seating arrangement and blocked my view to where I had to adjust my chair and crane to see around him. It happens! The Lounge, which is basically all windows and provides an awesome view of Austin, was freezing cold. I'm so glad that I didn't check my coat.

Kudos to Austin Cabaret Theater for bringing Stephanie J. Block to Austin! In the intimate setting of the Long Center’s Kodosky Lounge, Ms. Block’s performance was outstanding. She was so warm and open with the audience, interacting with us throughout her show, as she wove the “back-story” to many of the songs she sang. From her Liza Minnelli pieces, to those from Wicked and The Pirate Queen, her voice soared through the Austin night as we sat enthralled, hanging on every note. After the show she was so gracious, speaking to each and every person who stopped by her table for either a copy of her CD or photo. She talked to each of us as if we were the only person there- what a class act! Never pass up the opportunity see Ms. Block in performance – whether in a Broadway show or in a cabaret show such as last night’s. ACT - please bring her back during another season – this is a show you don’t want to miss!
