Austin Playhouse proudly opens their 2010-2011 Season with the Austin premiere of Broadway's longest running comedy! The 39 Steps has won two Tony Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre! This award-winning treat is packed with nonstop laughs, over 140 zany characters (all played by a ridiculously talented cast of 4), an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers and some good old-fashioned romance! In The 39 Steps, a man who is bored with his life meets a mysterious woman who says she's a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called "The 39 Steps" is hot on the man's trail in an incredible manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale! A riotous blend of virtuoso performances and wildly inventive stagecraft, The 39 Steps amounts to an unforgettable evening of theatre. The 39 Steps stars Austin Playhouse Acting Company members Benjamin Summers (Frost/Nixon, The Mousetrap) as Richard Hannay, David Stahl (Misalliance, Frost/Nixon, Picasso at the Lapin Agile) as Clown #1, Michael Stuart (Frost/Nixon, Misalliance, Inherit the Wind) as Clown #2, and Lara Toner (Misalliance, Dancing at Lughnasa) as Annabella Schmidt/Pamela/Margaret. The play is directed by Austin Playhouse Producing Artistic Director Don Toner, with sound design by the Gunn Brothers, lighting design by Don Day, properties design by Marco Noyola, and costume design by Glenda Barnes.
