Son y No Son, founded in Austin, TX, in 1999, is a favorite of the local Austin music scene, playing their eclectic and innovative renditions of the classic repertoire of Cuban son, Colombian cumbia and Mexican bolero and ranchera. This exciting and passionate Afro-Latin music ensemble, having developed a loyal regional following, is led by vocalist, conguero and bongocero Rey Arteaga, who has co-founded or played in some of the best Latin bands in Austin over the last twenty years (La Tríbu, Son Yuma, Centzontlé, Melecumbé, Sarah Fox and Joel Guzman, Charanga Cakewalk), and accompanied by some of the most talented and experienced musicians in Austin, with Russell Scanlon on lead guitar (Susanna Sharpe and Samba Police, Tamasha Africana , Lisa Marshall, The Crying Monkeys), Jean Jacques “JJ” Barrera on bajo sexto (Johnny Degollado y Su Conjunto, Santiago Jimenez, Jr., Tailgators, Conjunto Aztlán), and Mary Harsh on bass (Lisa Marshall).
Son y No Son, is proud to be celebrating the anniversary of their eleventh year this October 2, presenting their show on the Esquina Tango stage for the first time, with a performance paying tribute to some of the best of Latin dance music.
