Joshua Conkel's MilkMilkLemonade premiered in New York in 2009 to across-the-board rave reviews, hailed as a "hilariously absurd and moving tale" (Broadway World) and "like something Edward Albee might have written for a pair of 10-year-old protagonists...bitterly funny and broadly satiric" (nytheatre.com). Voted "Best Off-Off Broadway Show in 2009” by the New York Press and receiving 4 stars from TimeoutNY, the play was noted as “the campy kind of ridiculousness that allows Conkel to delve into the darker side of childhood” (Backstage).

Shrewd Productions is proud to present this wickedly funny, delightfully strange and decidedly shrewd exploration of gender, adolescence and how we fight to be who we are – no matter what.

      There is much to admire about the Shrewds' MilkMilk Lemonade, above all else the commitment of the performers to the absurd-but-familiar universe of the play. Several performances in particular stand... Expand

      There is much to admire about the Shrewds' MilkMilk Lemonade, above all else the commitment of the performers to the absurd-but-familiar universe of the play. Several performances in particular stand out, particularly Joe Hartman as a gigantic drag diva chicken named Linda. He's sexy, grounded, original, and above all, very chicken-like. Xaq Webb's ribbon-dancing sequence deserves attention as well, for being (a) really well done while being (b) completely, hilariously ridiculous. If I had any problems with the play, it's that the script, while being dynamic and adventurous in many ways, is actually a bit easy on the sentiment, particularly in the relationship between the two boys, and for making such a big deal about challenging gender norms, it still conforms to a fairly traditional idea of binary gender roles (butch and femme, husband and wife, etc.) That said, the two boys' enactment of 'marriage' was very funny and very charming, and overall, I left the show satisfied.       What a funny and humorous play this is, but let me say: For Adults Only, please. There is nothing funnier than kids running out of a barn with just their skives on! Well, except for Nanna, she was so good. I don’t see how she kept her walk during the entire play. A wacky tale for sure but definitely full of fun. Check it out before the Chicken hits it big.       Milk milk lemonade: the story of a boy and his chicken, his grandmother, and the kid down the road. The story of a gay boy and his Giant Diva Chicken, old cancer ridden life-hardened hag of a grandmother, and his abusive neighborhood pyromaniac bully of a secret best friend with a parasitic twin in his leg that tells him to do bad things as he and the kid explore their sexuality. A coming of age story about love, loss, and identity, with a tribute to 1960's Broadway Musicals. And chicken stand-up comedy. Shrewd productions squeezed every bit of story out of that concept. And it works. Go see it. Collapse
