Esquina Tango takes Austinites to Havana, Cuba, with the sounds of the new Latin group Charanga Si. The group plays a one-night concert and dance on September 18th at Esquina Tango headquarters. Charanga Si was conceived when two Cuban immigrants - missing the authentic sounds of their homeland - decided to form a band with musicians in Austin, and created Austin's only traditional Cuban dance band. Charanga groups - the mother of all salsa music - became popular in Cuba during the 40s and 50s and feature percussion, violin, and flute.
Individually, the members of “Charanga Si” have played in some of the greatest charanga groups - both in Cuba and the United States - performed in orchestras around the world, and have worked in numerous other genres of music. the octet includes Anel Delba on piano and vocals, Alison Baker on flute, Mincho Jacob on double bass, Juan Navarro on congas, Yonnel Augustin on bateria, Leonel Rojas on güiro and vocals, James Anderson on violin, and Carlos Barrera on vocals.
