The higher you climb, the better the view. Chopin’s very last work, a new American classic…and an even newer American classic. Works by Chopin, Schoenfield, and Led Zeppelin. Carla McElhaney, piano & Joel Becktell, cello, with special guest, Carmelo de los Santos, violin.

REVEL 2 of 5 was SPECTACULAR! Carla and Joel are stellar musicians, and their guest artist, Carmelo, was also tremendous! These 3 musicians presented Chopin with flawless beauty (as they do with all classical chamber music), but then they played Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," and brought the audience to their feet (and some to tears). There is clearly a little rock star in every classical musician. Their concert ended with a rousing piece filled with syncopated rhythms that had toes tapping and heads bobbing--my children were even dancing in their seats! Thank goodness they indulged us in a much-requested encore by reprising Led Zeppelin. I am counting down the days 'til the next REVEL concert: their Annual Holiday REVEL on December 19th at 6:00 p.m. at Northwest Hills United Methodist Church. Attending these concerts allows me to experience wonderful classical music without any of the pretentious airs! I wear my jeans and clap when I want to! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND REVEL!

To me the best part of the Revel
experience is that it is so accessible;
you have wonderfully talented musicians
performing in a setting where all are
welcome, and there's no pretense
involved. The musicians are very
dedicated and passionate, which comes
through very clearly during the
performances, and the music is played to
perfection.
The acoustics at Northwest Hills United
Methodist Church are remarkable, and the
sound is very enjoyable, from the most
subtle nuances to the brightest and
loudest cries from the instruments.
The material was eclectic and fun;
Chopin, and of course Led Zeppelin! It
was excellent to hear "Stairway To
Heaven" on piano, viola, and violin.
The whole experience is wonderful - I'd
recommend Revel to anyone wanting to
take in some excellent classical music
but not wanting to have to wear a tuxedo
or formal dress and pay a bunch for
parking downtown to do it!

I just attended the Revel concert on Sat., Oct. 23rd,
at NW Hills Methodist. Before the concert, the
group's pianist, Carla, came and spoke to a group of
students I mentor at UT's Butler School of Music.
She talked about her musical journey leading up to
the start of Revel, as well as gave some advice to
these freshmen music students. Her passion was
contagious, and when I took my students to see
her, I watched them on the edge of their seats,
rocking out to the more contemporary music, and
swaying and tapping their feet to the more serious
pieces, like Chopin. The feel of a Revel concert is
unlike that of any other chamber group. The way
they seamlessly incorporate classical and
contemporary music into one concert is both
enlightening and refreshing. Their motto of
playing what they like, no matter how dissimilar the
pieces are, is fearless. This fearlessness is what
makes Revel's mission which believes in actively,
not timidly, responding to music without bounds,
so real

I was SO fortunate to attend this Revel concert and really, really enjoyed myself. The musical selection was varied ranging from classical Chopin to Zepplin's "classical" rock. The real treat for me though was the Schoenfield -- a very funky and whimsical cafe soundtrack. Even though I caught Revel at the Northwest Hills venue, the music and musicianship couldn't have painted a clearer picture -- unless, from what I heard, I could have made the Friday night concert where the ambiance was complete with cafe tables, drinks and food. Next time for sure!!! Thanks Revel for a great night!
