"Discovering the Language of Photography: The Gernsheim Collection," an exhibition at the Harry Ransom Center, explores the history of photography through the Center's foundational photography collection. Featuring more than 175 items, the exhibition showcases one of the seminal collections of the history of photography in the United States. Amassed by the renowned husband-and-wife team of Helmut and Alison Gernsheim between 1945 and 1963, it contains an unparalleled range of more than 35,000 images, beginning with the world's earliest-known photograph from nature, made by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826-27. Its encyclopedic scope—as well as the expertise with which the Gernsheims assembled the collection—makes the Gernsheim collection one of the world's premier sources for the study and appreciation of photography.

      A wonderful display of photographs! Have you ever heard of SALT Paper photos? I hadn't until I saw this exhibit. Also, see the different phases of the moon from the 1800’s, quite amazing.... Expand

      A wonderful display of photographs! Have you ever heard of SALT Paper photos? I hadn't until I saw this exhibit. Also, see the different phases of the moon from the 1800’s, quite amazing. There are so many photographs, by many wonderful photographers. It is very difficult to pinpoint anyone photo that is better than the other. I also enjoyed the display of cameras; one of my favorites was the spy camera. A really cool way to learn about photography, to see where it has been and where it is going. So get going to the Harry Ransom Center and check out this awesome exhibit and see for yourself how truly lucky we are to have a place like the Ransom Center in town! Collapse

      The fact that we have an opportunity to see such amazing works of art...and that they are such an ingrained part of the history of art... makes me feel so blessed to live in Austin! Outstanding... Expand

      The fact that we have an opportunity to see such amazing works of art...and that they are such an ingrained part of the history of art... makes me feel so blessed to live in Austin! Outstanding exhibit! I will be back multiple times during the course of the time it is here! And kudos to Harry Ransom Center for not only a great exhibit but a terrific opening reception!
