This week at Cap City represents a homecoming of sorts for Kristin Key. No, Kristin’s not an Austin native. She did spend some time living near Austin (San Marcos), but more importantly, there’s a powerful connection between Kristin and Cap City: the club is where she auditioned for NBC’s reality show/comedy competition “Last Comic Standing” –and was selected. Moreover, she fared enormously well on the show, quickly elevating her national profile and, not coincidentally, giving her career trajectory a rocket boost. Perhaps this was more notable because she was also relatively young—25---as she stepped into that big, shiny, national spotlight, which was wholly consistent with her comedy career having been marked by preternatural developments: she started doing stand-up at 19, she became one of the country’s youngest female headliners. Another, related factor in her rise is that she’s a minister’s daughter and portions of her material are racy and raunchy—there’s considerable comedic power generated by the juxtaposition of those two elements. Meanwhile in the wake of “Last Comic Standing,” she’s since racked up more accomplishments and accolades, including additional TV appearances, frequent-guest status on the nationally syndicated radio program, “The Bob & Tom,” and the release of two comedy CDs. Welcome back, Kristin.
