Bruce James is a soul man, no doubt about. Listen to him and his music and you’ll hear it: the sounds of the South, the dance and the church, the R&B juke joint and the Apollo Theater, the jazz that was born in the Crescent City, and the soul music that came from Muscle Shoals, Memphis and Detroit the Motor City to enthrall the world. It’s in his voice, in his inimitable touch on the keyboards, and in the songs he writes as well as those from the R&B, jazz and pop canon that he makes all his own.
Dan Dyer greets his second decade as a musician with a self-titled album. From this soul-revivalist recording, produced out of an old snake-charmer church turned studio on the East side of Austin, emerges a spooky, diaphanous, and bright release drawn from an ever-deepening soul.
