We are very excited to present a special screening of THE DRY LAND with writer/director and former AFF staffer Ryan Williams in attendance. THE DRY LAND, Ryan's debut feature film, tells the story of a young soldier returning home from Iraq and trying to fall back into small town life. Because of his struggle with post-traumatic stress syndrome, the soldier's friends and family find it difficult to help him along the way. Official Film Festival Selections: • Atlanta Film Festival • Dallas International Film Festival - Target Narrative Feature Award • Edinburgh Film Festival - Best International Feature • Marfa Film Festival • Sundance Ryan first worked with us at the Austin Film Festival in 1999, while he was a student at the University of Texas. During his tenure here, Ryan met several people that later became his mentors including Polly Platt (BOTTLE ROCKET, SAY ANYTHING) and Stewart Stern (REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, THE UGLY AMERICAN). As Ryan himself put it, “All my mentors and influences go back to my roots in the Austin Film Festival.” Since leaving AFF in 2006, Ryan has gone on to make several shorts, including MUERTAS which screened with us at the 2007 Festival. Once he teamed with producer Heather Rae (FROZEN RIVER), Ryan was able to assemble a notable cast including America Ferrera, Ryan O'Nan, Jason Ritter, Wilmer Valderrama and Melissa Leo. The film was shot last year in New Mexico and Texas.
