Come out and support burgeoning independent filmmaking in Texas! Every year Houston Film Commission Deputy Director Alfred Cervates programs an amazing collection of the Best of Texas-made short films. There something for everyone in these films that represent the creative, bold filmmaking that comes from Texas. This year’s selection of shorts will be announced soon! Filmmakers in attendance!

      I was fortunate enough to attend the Texas Filmmakers Showcase at the Alamo Draft House Lake Creek. The 6 films shown evidenced impressive talent among filmmakers here in Texas. The first was Vater,... Expand

      I was fortunate enough to attend the Texas Filmmakers Showcase at the Alamo Draft House Lake Creek. The 6 films shown evidenced impressive talent among filmmakers here in Texas. The first was Vater, about a German army officer in WWII with a troubled past. For me, this was the weakest of the 6 and didn't do a lot for me. Next in line was Katrina's Son, about a young black man, homeless after Katrina, trying to find his mother in San Antonio. It was well-done and heartbreaking, and in my opinion the best of the 6. Next was "Love Bug," a cute little gem about a young insect lover asking a like-minded girl to a dance. The third was the cerebral sci-fi Mnemosyne Rising, about a space traveler having visions about his life back on earth. This was followed by a film produced in Hong Kong, The Natural Order of Things, and the tongue-in-cheek series of scenes "Never Do This." I hope for the best for the creators of all these works, and look forward to seeing more Texan-produced films. Collapse
