Iconoclast William Burroughs is doubtlessly best known for his form-shattering novels such as Naked Lunch, The Ticket That Exploded, Nova Express, and The Soft Machine. He is also remembered for his various drug addictions, his friendship with the other two members of the Beat triumvirate, Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, and the accidental killing of his wife in Mexico City during a failed William Tell experiment. During the 1960s, with cut-up artist Brion Gysin and filmmaker Anthony Balch, Burroughs explored the medium of film in several experimental works. After moving back to the US in 1974, Burroughs discovered that he really enjoyed reading from his works in public. Thus the shy, courteous gravel-voiced gentleman uncovered the inner performance artist and created collaborations with some of the major talents of the 70s, 80s, and 90s: John Giorno, Laurie Anderson, Gus Van Sant, Kurt Cobain, Sonic Youth, and so many others.

A new Danish documentary, WORDS OF ADVICE: "William S. Burroughs On the Road," provides a fascinating overview of Burroughs’ life and work, with special focus on his appearance and performance in Copenhagen in 1983. Along with the documentary we will show selections from his film collaborations from the 1960s.
