      This script by local playwright Jennifer Luster's and directed by Christy Bollenger had a way of making the less attractive aspects of our humanness easier to humor. Being a bit rough around the edges... Expand

      This script by local playwright Jennifer Luster's and directed by Christy Bollenger had a way of making the less attractive aspects of our humanness easier to humor. Being a bit rough around the edges helped make it all the more appealing in some way. I hope Jennifer and Christy keep working together. Collapse

      Taking into account that the City Theatre's goal is "the continued excellence in stage performances . . ." and the fact that this play is part of a summer arts festival that welcomes new, original... Expand

      Taking into account that the City Theatre's goal is "the continued excellence in stage performances . . ." and the fact that this play is part of a summer arts festival that welcomes new, original (and perhaps, untested) projects, I still have to admit some disappointment. The title certainly drew me in, but once in the audience, this one-act comedy could not sustain my interest. It's energy level waxed and waned too often. This play is a laudable effort, and Writer Jennifer Luster does have an ear for mother-daughter exchanges. There are some funny lines and some cute stage "business." The acting was adequate. Overall, however, I feel the play lacked a plot that would hold a diverse audience's interest, and some themes were repeated too much. Collapse

      When a theatre patron alerts front row friends: "You might want to move. I've heard there's spitting," I knew it would be a fun hour, even if a bit rough around the edges. I love "spit-takes" and cat... Expand

      When a theatre patron alerts front row friends: "You might want to move. I've heard there's spitting," I knew it would be a fun hour, even if a bit rough around the edges. I love "spit-takes" and cat fights. Among the 6 plays at City Theatre Austin's (CTA) Summer Acts! 2010 Festival (third year) was this emerging work by No Grey Productions. Director Christy Bollinger (drama dir., Grace Covenant Church) and cast breathed true life into Writer-Producer Jennifer Luster's first play for pro. stage. The script needs tweaks, but collected nice laughs. Even we dense testosterone types could identify some of those gals. (Think bingo parlor or coed poker game. I know nothing of bunko.) The "ghosts" were the absent and dead players. Teen angst, motherly control, competitive boil-overs, sage and crochety players, crying baby, peacemaker -- many characters & saucy situations. Misty Poe's comic timing as Lula was strong. Unfamiliar with CTA? Many good changes recently. Go. See. Enjoy! Collapse
