Film noir, meaning "dark film", is a term applied by French critics to post World War II American films that prominently feature shadowy, chiaroscuro or low-key lighting, and a somber mood, usually in the detective and thriller genres. The neo-noir sub-genre refers to crime dramas and mysteries produced from the mid-1960s to the present that, while they are generally shot in color and do not always emulate the visual style of classic film noir, often borrow the dark, cynical themes, archetypes such as the femme fatal and the hardboiled detective, as well as the twisted plots made famous by the film noir genre. Weeknight Cinema is a new monthly series at the Milwood Branch of the Austin Public Library that will showcase a film genre or sub-genre each month.
