Indie folk rock singer Kalu James raises funds for a school in West Africa. The band includes Drew Howard on guitar, Randall Squire on bass, Ed Miles on drums, Michael Rubin on harmonica and mandolin and the Hellfire Horns.

Born in Nigeria and raised in the Republic of Benin, James began singing in choir at age nine. He discovered his gift for songwriting many years later and miles away when he moved to Rochester, New York to study computer technology in 2001. In 2007 James moved to Austin to pursue music. He briefly worked for Apple in bilingual tech support (fluent in French, English and Igbo, a native language), but was soon able to devote himself completely to music.

The June 11 performance celebrates a successful year since Austin's mayor and city council honored him with the proclamation of "Kalu James Day." A percentage of proceeds will create a scholarship for International Model School in Cotonou, Republic Du Benin, which his mother owns and operates. The bilingual school offers grades kindergarten through twelve, and has a policy of not turning away students who are unable to pay tuition. There is no free public school system in Cotonou.
