From the top of her trademark red tresses down to her high heels, Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters was sexy and chic, a powerful stage presence. Her fitted crystal-encrusted lavender gown with its plunging décolletage sparkled almost as brightly as her personality. The appreciative audience enjoyed a wide range of mostly Broadway songs from “When You Wish Upon A Star” to a sensuous version of “Nothing Like a Dame” and “Fever,” the latter sung in a provocative pose atop the grand piano. Her voice was clear and beautiful, whether accompanied by the small orchestra or the piano alone. Between songs, she had a little repartee with the audience. (Want to buy her Florida vacation home?) She concluded her dazzling concert with a lullaby for her dog, a song she had written to enhance her children’s book. She promised to donate all the profits from the book and CD sales that night to the Town Lake and other local, no-kill animal shelters. Talent + generosity = a loveable diva.

From seeing Liza Minnelli and Bernadette Peters recently, I have a new philosophy: if there's an opportunity to see someone who's been performing to accolades for more than 20 years, take it.
In the age of American Idol and reality show "stars," Bernadette Peters showed an enthusiastic crowd what a true star looks like. I knew her from working with Carol Burnett and Steve Martin, not the theater. Peters managed to be both human and staged. She bounced from practiced jokes to pushing hair out of her face; one beat she'd pose for effect and the next have us riveted with melodic tension.
Her command extended to charming the audience through her casual handling of mistakes. She pulled off Betty Boop cuteness, had fantastic patter, and great comedic effect. Peters casually unleashed her power, and never lost control.
Her collaboration with her musical direction seems to have led to fantastic arrangements. I particularly enjoyed "Fever," "When You Wish Upon a Star," and "Shenandoah.
