      I read the novel The 39 Steps in middle school and recently watched a mini-movie version on KLRU. When the opportunity arose to see a comedic on-stage production, I jumped, and the jump was worth it.... Expand

      I read the novel The 39 Steps in middle school and recently watched a mini-movie version on KLRU. When the opportunity arose to see a comedic on-stage production, I jumped, and the jump was worth it. The theatre show was billed as 'spy novel meets Alfred Hitchcock and Monty Python'. It was very Python-esque. Hilarious. And there were a number of Hitchcock-related puns. The production was very clever, mixing actors with shadow stick puppets, and fast changing sets and costumes that added to the hilarity. The billing also mentioned an on-stage plane wreck, so I was expecting that. But, I wasn't expecting the Lochness monster! (No one ever expects the Lochness monster, or the Spanish Inquisiton!) An excellently executed production. No wonder The 39 Steps is a two-time Tony award-winning play. I loved it. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. Collapse

      The Paramount Theatre is such a good place for a play that calls on the concept of the 1935 adventure film The 39 Steps. The play is performed nearly verbatim but with only four people performing all... Expand

      The Paramount Theatre is such a good place for a play that calls on the concept of the 1935 adventure film The 39 Steps. The play is performed nearly verbatim but with only four people performing all the roles. Dan Fenaughty plays the hero, Richard Hannay, Jackie Schram plays three women with whom he has romantic entanglements, and Nicholas Pauling and Toby Smith play every other character in the show. It is a wide range of roles that they play. The pacing is quick as is the dialogue. This makes for quick changes of costume and character which they pull off brilliantly. The film's serious spy story is softened tremendously to the point where even someone murdered on stage appears funny. There are allusions to other Alfred Hitchcock films and even a moment of seeing the image of Hitchcock in one chase sequence. The play has no down moments for its pacing and action. I hope this play continues to have a great run. I saw a version of this with Austin Playhouse and they were spot on too. Collapse
