What leads a person to turn to terrorism as a means of loudly and murderously expressing a belief? In Laura Poitras’ new documentary, THE OATH, we learn how Abu Jandal came to believe that al-Qaeda and its commitment to terrorism provided the “one true path” in the Islamist war on “the infidel.” Intelligent, philosophical, and religious, Jandal went to Afghanistan in 1996. As a fellow Saudi citizen of Yemeni descent, Jandal soon became Osama bin Laden’s personal bodyguard, keeper of the two bullets that would insure bin Laden would never be taken alive. Jandal was so happy with his job and so convinced of his beliefs that he persuaded his brother-in-law, Salim Hamdan, to come to Afghanistan to work as bin Laden’s driver. The two would thus spend much time with the al-Qaeda leader.
"The most revelatory and essential documentary of 2010!”
--David Edelstein, New York magazine
“ASTONISHING AND ESSENTIAL! Both intimate and epic, mysterious and clear-eyed! Poitras draws a complex, novelistic portrait of two men whose intertwined destinies tell us more about this conflict than most newspaper articles ever could.”
--Scott Macaulay, Filmmaker Magazine
