The 14th-Annual Austin Chamber Music Festival presents the Cavani String Quartet. The Cavani String Quartet, winner of the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award, has been described by the Washington Post as "completely engrossing, powerful and elegant." In 2005, the Quartet was the first recipient of the Guarneri String Quartet Residency Award from Chamber Music America . The Austin American-Statesman described the quartet... "As a group, the quartet played as one, forcefully, confidently, yet passionately. Its full, brightly illuminated sound complemented solo playing as well, without sacrificing each player's individuality." The Cavani Quartet makes its home in Cleveland, Ohio, where they have been Quartet-in-Residence at the world-renowned Cleveland Institute of Music since 1988.

      I'm a singer, and have never learned to play an instrument other than basic piano, so I'm not the most qualified judge of instrumental ensembles. But I have to say, the Cavani String Quartet blew me... Expand

      I'm a singer, and have never learned to play an instrument other than basic piano, so I'm not the most qualified judge of instrumental ensembles. But I have to say, the Cavani String Quartet blew me away. (Apparently they are a familiar site to Austin classical music fans, as they have visited as guest artists for the University of Texas as Visiting Artists in Chamber Music for almost ten years.) Anyway, the unity and clarity of the sound cut cleanly through the air; one is reminded of Canadian Brass in this regard. The pieces were Beethoven's String Quartet in G Major, the String Quartet No. 2 by Szymanowski (who I hadn't heard before but I'm glad I did), and Quintet for Pinao and Strings in F Minor by Brahms. All of the pieces were a joy to listen to, and what really impressed me was the obvious passion and intensity with which they played. I hope to see the Cavani Quartet again. Collapse

      If you want to see four girls who 'just want to have fun' check out the raucous Cavani String Quartet. Flying bow hair, and just plan flying hair, will lift you out of your chair when you experience these high-heeled gals who put more passion in Brahms than the Lion himself! Having played, prayed, lived and died together for 15 years, these women feed off each other's breath, bow and genius more than reading notes. Don't expect four men in penguin suits. You're in for a Divine Goddess experience and the Cavani Quartet is your Stairway to Heaven! Collapse

      This was a concert with a great deal of variety: the Beethoven quartet, an early one, was sedate, playful, classical; the middle piece, by an early modern little-known Polish composer, was atonal... Expand

      This was a concert with a great deal of variety: the Beethoven quartet, an early one, was sedate, playful, classical; the middle piece, by an early modern little-known Polish composer, was atonal and eerie; the final piece, a quintet with the piano part played by the excellent Michelle Schumann, was utterly Romantic, passionate, complex and over the top. So all tastes were served. I wish Dr. Schumann hadn't offered lengthy introductions analyzing the Beethoven and Brahms pieces; a concert is not a classroom, and the speeches before each piece really spoil the atmosphere and interrupt the mood created by the pure music. All that commentary could have been relegated to program notes. Let the performers come in and play and trust the audience to understand and respond. So much explaining is an insult to the concert-goers and really spoils the experience. Otherwise, the players and program would have been wonderful. Collapse
