Join us for the opening reception of the Santo Niño Festivals in the Central Philippines exhibit featuring photographs by Jeff Hollingshead.

The Santo Niño Festivals date back to the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th Century. The Santo Niño (or Child Jesus) is a highly revered figure in the Philippines. In the 20th Century, the festivals began to incorporate the celebration of the indigenous cultures of that nation. Most of the people in the exhibit are wearing costumes and make-up in loose representations of indigenous tribes.

Jeff Hollingshead took the photographs of the festival in January of 2010. A retired high school social sciences teacher from New York City, Jeff has travelled in the Caribbean and to Brazil to enjoy and photograph other carnival celebrations. Jeff lives near the Terrazas Branch and plans to return to the Philippines soon.
