Siddhartha

Add Review/Comment
Nobel Prize winner Hermann Hesse’s illuminating novel Siddhartha was mandatory reading for those on an Eastern spiritual path in the 1960s. Conrad Rooks, scion of the Avon Cosmetics family, perhaps saw something of his own quest for meaning in the life of Siddhartha, Hesse’s protagonist who lived in the time of Buddha’s own journey toward enlightenment. Siddhartha and his companion Govinda spend time with ascetics but also immerse themselves in carnal pleasures and business affairs. Only after experiencing so much of life and reflecting upon those experiences does Siddhartha achieve nirvana as a simple ferryman on an endlessly moving river.
