The Trial

In this powerful adaptation of Kafka’s nightmarish novel, Joseph K., an innocuous, young bank clerk, is arrested by a police inspector and two detectives. Joseph’s neighbors all scorn him for his problems, but he has no idea what he is being charged with. No one seems willing or able to help him, not even his ineffectual defense attorney. Finally the executioners arrive and take the innocent man to a quarry, where they ask him to commit suicide. Just as innovative in story-telling and camera technique as CITIZEN KANE, THE TRIAL was actually Orson Welles’ favorite of his many films.
