This beautifully restored, uncut, and uncensored print of Visconti’s masterpiece tells the powerful story of the Parondi family of five boys and their mother, Rosaria. Leaving a hopeless life behind in southern Italy, the matriarch takes four sons to Milan in search of a better life with the fifth son who has already found a tiny bit of financial security. But Vincenzo can’t possibly help the whole family since he is starting his own. At first, through the sheer love and will power of the mother, the four boys seem to settle into life in the big city: one becomes a boxer, another works in a dry cleaners, and the youngest is in school. But Simone, the boxer, is led astray by a prostitute, who turns from his brutal fists to the arms of Rocco, recently returned from military service. Blood is not thicker than water in all cases, and the two brothers begin to struggle over the heart and body of Nadia. Visconti, a gay, communist aristocrat, turned this family drama into a sweeping, all-embracing epic of postwar Italian society. Winner of various international awards, including Venice.
