Freddy Carnes Productions presents a new Rock Musical based on Homer's Epic Poem. Odysseus must fight Poseidon, Calypso Antinoos and 100 suitors to regain his wife Penelope and son Telemachus. With a 15 member cast that includes: Richard Dodwell, Andrea Nelson, Janette Jones, Phillip Olson, Craig Kanne, Evan J. Kelley, Anna Maria Garcia and Olga Kasma-Carnes this new musical will excite and entertain.       Consider it a work in progress. It is always quite a risk to write, direct and produce your own theatre piece, and for this we give Freddy Carnes some admiration. However, the first recommendation is that you get some great voices to pull off the singing. Not so true in this production. It played more like a children's theatre piece, unsure if it wanted to be a comedy or a serious opera. Good elements came from the comical performance of Craige Kanne and the valiant efforts of Philip Olson as Telemachus, but overall The Odyssey still needs some work. Collapse

      I can't say I particularly enjoyed this show. Fundamentally, "The Odyssey" didn't know what it was trying to do or be -- the music, the storytelling, the acting were all in different universes and... Expand

      I can't say I particularly enjoyed this show. Fundamentally, "The Odyssey" didn't know what it was trying to do or be -- the music, the storytelling, the acting were all in different universes and stylistic envelopes. I applaud the production for being willing to try for a sincere and emotional telling of Homer's story and am always impressed by original work, but I couldn't really get beyond the execution. That said, bright spots in the play included Craige Kanne as Eumaios et al, who can make ANYTHING hysterical and is given several opportunities to do so, an evocative shadow play of Odysseus' adventures, and Philip Olson, whose firm but disillusioned Telemachus actually seemed like someone who would break out into angsty rock music. I honestly do applaud and congratulate the team for mounting an original musical -- no easy feat, especially with Homer involved -- I just want them to figure out what exactly they want the play to be, and then serve that with a more pro treatment.
