After cheering the wit, charm, and romance of Shooting Star and Becky’s New Car, ZACH audiences are in for a thrilling story of intrigue as Austin playwright Steven Dietz returns to ZACH with his razor-sharp play. Two married writers live a life whose very profession places them on edge of fact and fiction. When Linda faces a fatal diagnosis, she and husband Michael are forced to confront the notion that the only thing harder than dying with a secret is living with one. Dietz, the most produced playwright in the country, directs this gasp-out-loud comedic drama with his trademark and irresistible blend of humor, heart and precision.

Does unrequited love possess a life of its own? As we move on with day-to-day existence, does a past romantic encounter move and grow along with us in a parallel universe, or perhaps with a sub-reality in a painfully revealing journal or a secret diary? These are questions the talented and local playwright Steven Dietz raises.
Charles Otte, the Director, writes that the complexity of the play’s theme mirrors some of the same complexities of the human heart. And that, folks cuts to the chase of this sensitive play with its playful wordplay and occasional laughter.
The arena stage is perfect and kudos to the lighting and sound design – Jason Amato and Antonio Garfias that let’s the characters step backward in time and then into the present. And this trio of actors – McCall, Gomes, Andrews, with a handful of props and little set furniture, play off of each other in sparkling fashion, thanks to Dietz wonderful script.
I urge, Austin theatregoers to see this “comedic drama.”

Although I personally prefer playwright Steven Dietz’ two other Zach-performed plays that I’ve seen this one obviously has merit, too. It received the Kennedy Ctr. Fund for New American Plays Award and has already been produced Off-Broadway.
The richly-nuanced performance of stage veteran Meredith McCall is worth the price of admission alone. The acting of Robert Gomes with his impressive resume’ and the younger Sydney Andrews are highly complementary (cq).
The smaller Whisenhunt Stage provides the audience an intimate view into the lives of a married couple – both novelists – one a “regretful” commercial success and one a success with a secret who now teaches creative writing. Unknowingly intertwined in both their lives, one of which is terminally ill, is “the other woman.”
The minimal but clever staging and the careful flashbacks add unexpected suspense. Witty repartee? Of course. Dietz excels at dialogue, but sharpened the exchanges, since the two leads are lovers of words.

Steven Dietz can certainly write. I will give him that. I will not reveal anything that as an audience you would not like to find out the way that I did. I treated the play like an onion. It can be cut down the certain and reveal many layers or it can be pealed layer by layer until one is at the core of the situation. The story revolves around a story that can be truth or fiction. As the story progresses one is given the answer and it is well worth the wait. Zach Scott theatre is the perfect setting for the three characters on the stage. It was wonderful seeing Meredith McCall on stage in a drama. This is an actress who knows how to command any character I have seen her do. Sydney Andrews returns to the stage and is equal to the strong presense of Ms. McCall. Robert Gomes as Michael is able to survive on stage with these two powerful performances and give a stellar one of his own. The story is one where you must pay attention but it is so worth it. The set is simple but story is not.

Fact or Fiction? We might not ever know. We might
have to settle with what we imagine. Fiction is a
work of literary imagination. The married writers,
Michael and Linda Waterman, struggle knowing
more about each other after Linda gets diagnosed
with a terminal brain tumor. The surprises
discovered are layered in the mystery of fiction.
Did it happen, did it not? This show is an active,
engaging drama that skillfully uses language to
develop the plot. I would find myself thinking
about the multiple meanings of some of the lines
during the show. The show engages the mind as
well as the senses. The three actors have chemistry
together and this contributes to the dynamic show.
