Book, Music & Lyrics by Jonathan Larson | Directed by Dave Steakley
Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of New York City bohemia when ZACH transports you to the lively East Village where performance artists, musicians, and hipsters of all persuasions band together to revolt against convention. The artist squatters have taken over the theatre and have created an environment in which you are fully surrounded by Austin’s finest rock vocalists and musicians and visual artists’ creative expressions of sculptural whimsy. And when Mimi locks eyes with Roger, and Angel spies Colin, and Maureen tugs at Joanne this rock opera ignites sparks of love that redefines what family can be. Viva la vie boheme!

The stage for RENT is simple and effective. AND-it is both in front of you and above and around you, so you really feel intimately connected to the story as the lives of these New York friends unfolds. The themes of the musical are simple and familiar- life, love, longing, loss, friendship. The local Austin actors are young, energetic, and talented. Andrew as the eager young film maker is focused and energetic. Roderick is both powerful and tender as Collins. Have you ever felt invigorated and challenged by the sheer beauty of the actors pouring their all into their performances? I have--and recently--at RENT. This is my second time to enjoy RENT at the ZACH SCOTT Theatre. There are songs that uplift and songs that make you ponder the ups and downs of love. I found especially delightful the scene in which the cast dances ON TOP of the tables at the restaurant while singing about the death of Bohemia!
What will move you most deeply from attending RENT remains for you to experience!

Sadly, the much anticipated production of Rent didn't cut the mustard for me or my friends. While there is a lot of talent on the stage, and a lot of energy, we felt the casting of local musicians with little to no acting experience hurt the overall production. While some of their voices were darn impressive at times, it was hard to overlook the lack of character. I hope over time their performances get better, as this is such an important story to tell. But for the ticket price at Zach, I hope in the future, they return to casting people who have already done their time perfecting their craft in all aspects. There were many talented ensemble members I would have liked to have seen in these roles.

After seeing RENT numerous times in New York
throughout its extended run at the Nederlander, I
was left wondering what Austin could do with it. At
Zach, I saw some directorial points that were
exactly like the Broadway production, and some
points that were completely reinterpreted. As it
was opening night, there were a few missteps and
some actors who may have been losing their voices,
but it didn't matter. Jonathan Larson's story about
living and loving each other every moment of every
day rang true. It is still as relevant today as it was
in 1996. There were two standout performances:
Andrew Cannata as Mark & Roderick Sanford. Both
were spot on, pitch perfect & wonderful actors.
They were simple in their approach to their
characters and found an honesty that the audience
can connect to. These two men are worth the price
of admission!

during the performance, most can easily

While not all of the performances are
top tier there's not a truly bad one to
be seen. My main criticism would be
that, while all of these actors have
excellent voices, a few of them are
simply cast outside of their vocal
range. This leads to some disappointing
changes and moments in a few of the key
songs.
However, there are also a few knockout
performances. Roderick Sanford gives one
of the most memorable. With outstanding
vocal ability Sanford is a delight to
listen to.
But the show is stolen, oddly enough, by
the character of Mark Cohen, played by
Andrew Cannata. Mark, as the narrator,
is a role that is too often left two-
dimensional by actors that lack either
the desire or talent to flesh him out.
Cannata possesses both in spades, and it
shows.
Also notable is Courtney Sanchez who
delivers a beautiful solo in 'Seasons of
Love'.

Not a complex story but oh what life the actors breathed into the story. Casting was so on the money for this one. New faces at Zach, refreshing. The musical directions so sharp. When every element of theatre works together with a good story, this is what you get from Zach's presentation of RENT. Outstanding, the best, the lead Andrew Cannata (Mark)weaved in and out of the storytelling so flawlessly as did Roderick (Tom), Joshua (Angel) and Ginger Leigh (Maureen)what dazzling display of raunchy but classiness. John Pointer's voice resonates superbly throughout the production, with a few more productions, he will eventually ease into acting as superbly as he sings. This is the finest of Zach. Go See for Yourself! Viva La Vie B Boheme

Whether you are a long-time fan of the musical RENT or a newbie, you will delight in this powerful show performed with passion and verve by a very talented and dedicated cast. The emotional power of the show is all the more palpable due to the intimate scale of the Kleberg Stage at Zach Scott. The upper "wings" of the theatre are also used by the cast so that at times you are surrounded by the action of this heart-moving performance.
Jonathan Larson-creator of this work- must surely be pleased, as he looks down from heaven, to see his record-breaking work deeply delight, move, and motivate audiences in Austin! All of the actors give stellar performances that will make you thrill with joy as well as weep with heart-ache. Especially note-worthy for me were the performances of Andrew Cannata in the role of Mark, Joshua Denning as Angel and Karma Stewart as Mimi.
Folks, you can see Broadway-quality work right here in Austin. Please give yourself the gift of attending this play.
